Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John,
and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them,
and his clothes became dazzling white,
such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,
and they were conversing with Jesus.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
“Rabbi, it is good that we are here!
Let us make three tents:
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;
from the cloud came a voice,
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone
but Jesus alone with them.
As they were coming down from the mountain,
he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone,
except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
So they kept the matter to themselves,
questioning what rising from the dead meant.

Today the Church celebrates with great joy the Transfiguration of our Lord. Why did Jesus take Peter, James and John up Mount Tabor and show Himself in glory with Moses and Elijah? Think about what was coming up – the passion, crucifixion, and death of Jesus. Jesus wanted to show them there was hope when things looked bad. He wanted them to see that there was new life after death even when things looked bleak.
We too may have mountaintop experiences with our Lord. It might be the birth of your child. It might be a retreat experience. It might be a nature walk. It might be receiving your first Communion or Reconciliation or some other sacrament. I believe that the Lord reveals Himself to us in glory many times during our lives. He is trying to show us that He is with us always, as He promised before ascending into heaven. He is trying to show us His love always. And Jesus wants us to hold onto hope when things look bad.
We also all have desert experiences when we feel like God is nowhere to be found. St. Ignatius of Loyola says that we should remember these mountaintop experiences, for they will carry us through the desert periods of life. He says the powerful experiences of God are like never-ending fonts of grace that we can return to time and time again.
For example, the day of my priestly ordination I had a mountaintop experience. I felt the presence of Jesus Christ in my heart at that moment so powerfully. I can honestly say that I don’t have that same mountaintop experience every time I celebrate the Holy Mass, but I know deep in my heart that the Lord is present. I recall those powerful experiences when I question what I’m doing or have doubts about God’s presence in my life.
The Transfiguration was not just meant for Peter, James, and John, but for you and me as well. Jesus wants to give us hope in the middle of our trials and tribulations.
Mother Teresa experienced more than 20 years of spiritual dryness. However, she drew upon experiences in her life when she felt God’s presence very strongly. These experiences helped her get through the desert. There are times when we don’t feel God’s presence, but that does not mean that God is not there.
So let us take time today to reflect on our mountaintop experiences. Write them down with as much detail as you can remember. These will be important when your prayer is dry. The Lord loves you and wants you to know that He will be with you until the end of time (Matthew 28, 20).
You may say, “I have never had a mountaintop experience.” I encourage you to spend time each day in silence reflecting on your life. Reflect on each day and how the Lord reveals Himself to us. Love is self-revelatory always. When two people fall in love, they reveal their true selves to one another. Jesus does that with us all the time. Do I reveal myself to Him? Do I give myself to Him?
Read the Bible, trust in God’s mercy and your life will be transformed!

Fiesta de la Transfiguración de Nuestro Señor
Marcos 9, 2-10
En aquel tiempo, Jesús tomó aparte a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, subió con ellos a un monte alto y se transfiguró en su presencia. Sus vestiduras se pusieron esplendorosamente blancas, con una blancura que nadie puede lograr sobre la tierra. Después se les aparecieron Elías y Moisés, conversando con Jesús.
Entonces Pedro le dijo a Jesús: “Maestro, ¡qué a gusto estamos aquí! Hagamos tres chozas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías”. En realidad no sabía lo que decía, porque estaban asustados.
Se formó entonces una nube, que los cubrió con su sombra, y de esta nube salió una voz que decía: “Éste es mi Hijo amado; escúchenlo”.
En ese momento miraron alrededor y no vieron a nadie sino a Jesús, que estaba solo con ellos.
Cuando bajaban de la montaña, Jesús les mandó que no contaran a nadie lo que habían visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre resucitara de entre los muertos. Ellos guardaron esto en secreto, pero discutían entre sí qué querría decir eso de “resucitar de entre los muertos”.

Hoy celebramos la Transfiguración de nuestro Señor. ¿Por qué Jesús llevó a Pedro, Santiago y Juan al Monte Tabor y se mostró en gloria con Moisés y Elías? Piensa en lo que vendría: la pasión, la crucifixión y la muerte de Jesús. Jesús quería mostrarles que había esperanza cuando las cosas parecían ponerse mal. Quería que vieran que había nueva vida después de la muerte, incluso cuando las cosas parecían sombrías.
Nosotros también podemos tener experiencias en la cima de la montaña con nuestro Señor. Podría ser el nacimiento de su hijo. Puede ser una experiencia en un retiro. Podría ser un paseo por la naturaleza. Podría estar recibiendo su primera Comunión o Reconciliación o algún otro sacramento. Creo que el Señor se revela a nosotros en la gloria muchas veces durante nuestras vidas. Él está tratando de mostrarnos que Él está con nosotros siempre, como Él prometió antes de ascender al cielo. Él está tratando de mostrarnos Su amor siempre. Y Jesús quiere que nos aferremos a la esperanza cuando las cosas se ven mal.
También todos tenemos experiencias en el desierto cuando sentimos que Dios está muy lejos o no existe. San Ignacio de Loyola dice que debemos recordar estas experiencias en la cima de la montaña, porque nos llevarán a través de los períodos de vida del desierto. Él dice que las poderosas experiencias de Dios son como fuentes interminables de gracia que podemos regresar una y otra vez.
Por ejemplo, el día de mi ordenación sacerdotal ha sido una experiencia de montaña. Sentí la presencia de Jesucristo en mi corazón en ese momento tan poderosamente. Puedo decir honestamente que no tengo la misma experiencia de cumbre cada vez que celebro la Santa Misa, pero sé profundamente en mi corazón que el Señor está presente cada vez en cada Misa. Recuerdo esas experiencias poderosas cuando cuestiono lo que estoy haciendo o tengo dudas acerca de la presencia de Dios en mi vida.
La Transfiguración no fue sólo para Pedro, Santiago y Juan, sino para nosotros también. Jesús quiere darnos la esperanza en medio de nuestras tribulaciones.
Madre Teresa experimentó más de 20 años de sequedad espiritual. Sin embargo, se basó en experiencias en su vida cuando sintió la presencia de Dios muy fuerte. Estas experiencias la ayudaron a atravesar el desierto. Hay momentos en que no sentimos la presencia de Dios, pero eso no significa que Dios no está allí.
Así que tomemos tiempo hoy para reflexionar sobre nuestras experiencias en la cima de la montaña. Escríbalas con todos los detalles que puedas recordar en tu diario. Estos serán importantes cuando su oración esté árida. El Señor te ama y quiere que sepas que Él estará contigo hasta el fin de los tiempos (ver Mateo 28,20).
Usted puede decir: “Nunca he tenido una experiencia cumbre.” Le animo a pasar el tiempo cada día en silencio, reflexionando sobre tu vida. Reflexione sobre cada día y cómo el Señor se revela a nosotros. El amor es auto-revelador siempre. Cuando dos personas se enamoran, revelan su verdadero yo unos a otros. Jesús lo hace con nosotros todo el tiempo. ¿Me entrego a Él?
